A Maui-Led Approach to Recovery and Long-Term Resilience

Maui and all of Hawai‘i were left reeling after the devastating Lahaina and Kula wildfires. The sheer scale of destruction left communities and leaders at every level—local, state, and federal—struggling to find a path forward. In response, the Hawai‘i State Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT) formed the landmark Maui Economic Recovery Commission (ERC), bringing together a diverse coalition of more than 100+ notable stakeholders and community leaders to address urgent challenges across the economic, workforce, housing, environmental, and financial sectors.

A bold, innovative, and collaborative approach was essential—one that fostered creativity, built connections, and brought everyone to the table to assess needs, explore solutions, and develop realistic, actionable plans.

Good Juju joined the One Shared Future team of facilitators, providing tools and strategies to make the process more engaging and effective.  Over the course of nearly a year, Good Juju’s graphic recordings, graphics, icons, templates, and storymaps helped participants navigate complex ideas, align perspectives, and find common ground on solutions for the future.  Many of these graphic artifacts can be found throughout the Maui ERC Website here.

CHALLENGE:
How to cope with an unprecedented disaster with widespread, far-reaching impacts?

The sheer volume of devastation from the Maui wildfires left everyone–community, state, and federal leaders alike–wondering how to recover in the aftermath.

With systems in disarray and the state reeling from grief, the challenges of rebuilding were immense—uncharted territory with no roadmap or easy solutions.

SOLUTION:
Bring everyone to the table with an innovative approach and inspire unprecedented solutions.

Over the course of a year, multiple large-group meetings were held in person, complemented by smaller online Learning Groups where facilitators and subject matter experts guided participants through information-rich presentations. Learning Group partnerships focused on key areas of economic recovery, and a structured path forward for healing and generated recommendations for the larger group to consider and help refine.

Online Engagement
Live digital graphic recording, interactive templates, and slides kept participants engaged, provided structure, and served as catch-up notes for those unable to attend or experiencing technical difficulties.

In-Person Engagement
Good Juju facilitated interactive graphic walls, supported facilitators with custom designed templates, and real-time graphic recording. Participants left with a clear, tangible strategy, graphic recordings to reference throughout the initiative.

Visual Artifacts & History Map
At the close of these series of meetings participants helped map out key events, learnings and achievements and commit to future ongoing collaborative work beyond the project term. This project was commemorated with a finished History map.
